Helping Families & Professionals Connect with Information, Training and Resource Since 1969

Our 2009 Annual Conference Was A Great Success!
It was amazing and heartwarming to see - even a recession couldn’t keep over 300 dedicated public and
private school special ed and general ed teachers, administrators, school support staff, parents, and a variety of
other community service professionals from attending our 35th annual state LD & ADHD conference at the Ritz
Charles Conference Center!  Conference attendees were able to choose from a variety of breakout workshops
presented by a knowledgeable group of professionals who shared current ideas and approaches to teaching and
student learning.  Barnes and Noble again provided a wonderful bookstore which offered the latest LD & ADHD
books and videos for professionals and parents.  We are thankful to the Eli Lilly Foundation for a grant that
allowed us to offer attendance scholarships for parents, teachers and collage students as well.
Guest Luncheon Speaker Inspires Attendees
Samantha Abeel from Muncie, Indiana was our Awards
Luncheon guest speaker. She spoke about her academic
struggles, and the anxiety and social isolation she felt before
her LD diagnosis.  She also shared how, with the support of
her parents and teachers, she focused on her strengths and
creativity to become an award-winning author and nationally
known motivational speaker.  Her inspiring message was
about awareness, promoting positive self-esteem, advocacy
and hope!  We were also excited to give each attendee a
copy of Abeel’s book, 'My Thirteenth Winter' with the support
of the grant from the Eli Lilly Foundation.

Our Awards Luncheon included this darling Anniversary
Cupcake for dessert in celebration of our 35th Annual State
Conference.  Our volunteer Indiana Wesleyan University
college students help assemble the cake picks!

Vendor Door Prize Drawings
Over 60 national and Indiana based businesses, organizations, and vendors showcased their LD & ADHD
educational products, resources, and services for educators and parents by advertising in our conference
resource binder, inserting their marketing catalogs, flyers and promotional novelty items into the attendee
registration bags, as well as donating great door prizes. Attendees were eager to enter the drawings for a chance
to win a vendor door prize and in celebration of our 35th annual state conference, one lucky attendee won the
grand prize – a flat screen TV!  Visit our LDA website to use the participating vendors’ website links.

Thanks to our Conference Volunteers!
We want thank the Conference Committee members, Kathy Klawiter, Chairperson, Amy Forshey,
and Patty Useem, for their hard work in planning the details of this year’s program.  A special thanks goes
to Amy for coordinating the Indiana Wesleyan University Students who served as Registration and Room Hosts,
and stuffing the Registration Bags for Attendees, as well as the Awards Committee members chaired by
Jerry Klawiter for their support in selecting the award recipients this year.  We also want to give a thank you
to our board members and professional advisory board members; Sharon Harris, Mary Tremmel, Jackie Bates,
Nancy Miller, Cathy Weinmann and Janet George, for their help throughout the day.
