David Carson was our luncheon speaker.  David told us about
how he wasn’t diagnosed with a learning disability until he was
23 years old – after flunking out of three colleges.  David was
very candid about the effect of growing up without being
diagnosed on his self-esteem.
2011 LDA of Indiana Award Recipients

On behalf of the board of LDA of Indiana, I would like to thank all those who
attend and presented at our 37th annual conference.

We understand that it isn’t easy for teachers to attend conferences.  Due to
cutbacks in educational funding, teachers can get approval only for those
conferences and continuing education opportunities that administrators and
principals feel are the most worthwhile. We are honored that our conference is
considered to be one of the “worthwhile”.

This year, we added to round table discussions to the conference.  We received
many excellent proposals from people wanting to present but simply did not have
the time slots to accommodate all of them. So we included informal round table
discussions which allowed attendees to get information from as many sources as
possible during the day.

We are also proud that the Governor’s Council for People With Disabilities has
again awarded us a grant so that parents and individuals with disabilities, those
who would have to pay for the conference out of their own pockets, attended at
little or no cost.

If you were not able to attend this year’s conference, I hope you will consider
attending next year.  We will begin planning the 2012 conference in January.

We had an amazing keynote speaker – Nancie Payne.
Dr. Payne is very frank about her life – including being a
young, single mother on welfare.  But once she was
diagnosed with a learning disability, she graduated
college and earned her master’s degree and a Ph.D.
LDA of Indiana wishes to thank the
Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities
and the
Eli Lilly Endowment, Inc.
for their conference grant support.
Their support enabled us to provide parent and teacher scholarship!
Our student volunteers and faculty members from Indiana
Wesleyan University who helped throughout the day as
registration greeters, breakout room hosts and av coordinators.
Professor Amy Forshey talks with the student
volunteers about their jobs as room hosts.
