The Great Word Quest
The GWQ activities are based on cutting-edge research on how children learn to read, the role of
electronic media, and what works in classroom and home settings.  Joining one of three teams, kids
age six to eight take on virtual adventures designed to scaffold and improve core literacy skill
development — the Aquanauts, Trailblazers or Skyscrapers.  Players advance through literacy-based
scavenger hunts to help kids strengthen critical reading skills, such as phonics, reading comprehension,
and vocabulary.  The games also include a progress tracker chart for parents and teachers.  Visit PBS
KIDS Raising Readers website to find other innovative learning activities as well.
